Here in Fort Lauderdale, trucks are part of the daily scenery. Some people buy them for work, some for lifestyle, some just because they like the look. Ford’s latest announcement is aimed at all of them — and it caught my attention.

They are building a fully electric pickup with a starting price around $30,000, and it is being made in Kentucky. That is not a typo. Thirty thousand for a U.S.-built electric truck.

Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed the news at their Louisville plant, where they already build the heavy-duty F-Series. This new model is smaller, RAV4-sized inside, but still has a functional bed and a frunk. Ford says it will be quicker than the Mustang EcoBoost and able to power a home for up to six days. Living in hurricane country, that capability is more than just a cool feature — it is peace of mind.

The truck will sit on Ford’s new Universal EV Platform, designed to cut cost and complexity. It uses large single castings instead of multiple smaller parts, eliminates 4,000 feet of wiring, and integrates a structural LFP battery that is lighter and more efficient. Even the way it is built is changing. Ford is moving away from the traditional assembly line to what they call an assembly tree, where major sections are built in parallel and joined later.

The first version will be a pickup, but Ford has already hinted at SUVs, sedans, and even vans based on the same architecture. We will not see them until at least 2027, but at this price point and with these specs, it could shake up the electric vehicle market in a big way.
In a time when most EVs are moving further out of reach for the average buyer, Ford is making a statement. And for someone who has spent a career in marketing and a lifetime around cars, I can tell you — this is one to watch.
